Team Cross River para athletes, Aki Emmanuel Okon and Iya Okon Iya, both from Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, are set for action as they represent Nigeria at the ongoing 2026 CAC Para Track and Field Championship in Abuja.
The talented para- cyclists earned their national team call-up following their outstanding performances at the last National Para Games, where they displayed exceptional determination, discipline, and sporting excellence. Their impressive achievements secured them a first-ever opportunity to wear the national colours on the international stage.
Speaking ahead of the championship, both athletes expressed confidence and optimism about making Cross River State and Nigeria proud through excellent performances at the competition. They reaffirmed their commitment to giving their very best while representing the country among other top para athletes across Africa.
The athletes also used the opportunity to appreciate their coach, Musa Garuba, for his dedication, support, and relentless efforts in training and preparing them for the championship. They further extended gratitude to the Hon. Etta Lawrence, Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission for the encouragement and support given to para sports development in the state.
In addition, they thanked His Excellency, the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Apostle, Sen. Bassey Otu, for his continued commitment to sports development and youth empowerment, which has continued to inspire athletes across the state to pursue excellence.
Their participation at the 2026 CAC Para Track and Field Championship is another major milestone for Cross River State in producing athletes capable of competing and excelling on the continental stage.
